DIY – Do It Your-Selfie: How to take flattering selfies!

One of the most common requests I get is for a headshot that doesn’t look like a head shot. Let’s face it. We live in the age of the selfie. So much so, they have now invented “selfie sticks” to not only get in the way of everyone’s view, but to make it appear you have wandered about life with a personal photographer snapping your impossibly distanced shot of your mug as if your arms belonged on stretch Armstrong. “But Heather!” you cry. “Everyone is doing it!” Alas, you are probably correct. But what makes a truly good selfie? Below are a few things to bear in mind before haphazardly snapping that volume button to take a quick shot. Be sure to comment your favorite selfie tips and tricks too!

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Just because you are taking a selfie doesn’t mean everyone can’t tell you are in the bathroom. Look around your face in the screen to make sure nothing embarrassing is going to spoil that selfie. Also, when doing this in public, be aware of potential dangers around you. Things like potholes when walking, poles, oncoming traffic, bike messengers, werewolves, and anything involving Mutants. Unless it is Wolverine. If it’s Wolverine, get him in the picture.
  • Be aware of the angle you are holding your camera or phone. Angling the lens towards the ceiling makes things look larger than they are. Angling the lens or phone towards the floor helps to minimize the appearance of things like double chins, longer noses, bigger ears etc. Caution though. Don’t angle straight down, as this has a perspective distortion that renders you looking like those dogs that are all noses.
  • Notice where your free hand is. Does your picture need sass? Attitude? Then throw that hand on your hip like you mean it! Don’t let your hands and arms just hang there. Put them to work!
  • Don’t be afraid to try again. Look, it’s the digital age, and thankfully retaking that shot doesn’t cost a thing! Take a second, take a deep breath, and shoot again.

Most important of all: Learn to love your selfie! You only get one you. So, choose each day to love your selfie.
